Smithfield Feedlot is a family owned and operated company, located at Proston in the South Burnett, Queensland, Australia. Established in 1986 by the partnership RC Smith & Co as a means to finish home-bred cattle, Smithfield began as a 100 head feedlot in which cattle were fed from grain self-feeders. Today, Smithfield has a licensed capacity of 18,500 standard cattle units, employs 30 people, and is one of the largest & most technologically advanced family owned feedlots in Australia.

At Smithfield, we believe that our employees are the backbone of our business, and make up the most valuable part of our enterprise. At Smithfield, employees are openly encouraged to make suggestions and often implement their own ideas, in order to improve operations at the feedlot. Often, it is our employees who have the day to day experience with certain tasks who come up with the best ideas to improve our operations. Being a family owned and operated company, the managers of Smithfield are freely accessible to talk to and to listen to your suggestions.

Management of Smithfield Feedlot place particular importance on staff development, both professionally and personally. Employees are encouraged to gain skills in as many areas as possible while at Smithfield, through our extensive on the job training. Training is also provided during regular visits from our consulting feedlot nutritionist and veterinarian. Employees looking to further their skills are also encouraged to do so, such as through participation in a short course or seminar/conference.

Smithfield also employs a number of Trainee Managers, whom are young, enthusiastic people who have generally recently graduated from university with a degree in (for example) Agricultural Science, Animal Science, Agricultural Economics etc. Trainee Managers work in each area of the feedlot on a rotational basis, over a period of up to three years. The aim of our trainees is to enable them to gain as much hands on, practical experience as possible, with the view to being able to manage each area of the feedlot when required. Trainee Managers are also encouraged to participate in training programs and short courses, to promote personal and professional development. Such courses may also work to develop the management skills of our Trainee Managers.

In order to ensure that our employees are well looked after both inside and outside of work, Smithfield Feedlot offers a wide range of accommodation options for employees, all of which are in very close proximity to the feedlot. Accommodation is offered to employees requiring this in conjunction with our very attractive wage and salary packages.
