Rimfire had been approached by many of its valued clients over the years on how to best identify leading graduates completing agri-focussed degrees or those doing generalist degrees but looking to work in the agribusiness industry. The discussions invariably concluded that running a program for some companies was not an option due to the high cost involved as well as time and the difficulty in sourcing candidates with a “fit “for their business. Companies were also reluctant to build a strong relationship with just one education provider, as they did not want to alienate other providers. This has resulted in some companies having a more casual relationship with some institutions and some companies simply not having one at all.
Another difficulty companies faced was the basis by which ‘top’ graduates were selected. This has traditionally been scholastically based. Clients wanted a program which not only selected graduates on academic merit, but also predominantly selected graduates on cultural outcomes and experiences suiting their business. This included graduates’ general agribusiness knowledge and experience, willingness to learn and develop within an organisation, ability to communicate with clients or customers and the right ‘attitude’ towards the industry.
As a result of this, Rimfire has successfully co-ordinated and delivered 6 Grad-Link programs.
In 2004, the first Grad-Link program was launched and exceeded the expectations of both the participating agribusiness companies as well as the students. The day provided students with an overall understanding of companies and their operations within the agribusiness value chain, as well as creating many employment opportunities for students.
In 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008 the Grad-Link program saw the number and quality of candidates applying for the program increase as well as participation from agribusiness companies. In 2005 students from Perth universities took part in the program and in 2006 the first Grad-Link day was held in Perth, which was a great success.
